Spend time with Mi’kmaw Elder and artisan Francis Jadis as he shares stories, teachings and knowledge connected to Mi’kmaq basket weaving.

Francis learned basket weaving by watching members of his family and has continued working with wood, ash and traditional techniques for more than 50 years. During this interactive experience, he will share how basket weaving has shaped his life, the knowledge carried through the materials, and the importance of passing these traditions to future generations.

Guests will watch Francis work on a basket while hearing about the process, tools and materials involved. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions, join the conversation and learn directly from Francis’s experiences.

This is a cultural-sharing and storytelling experience rather than a hands-on basket-making session. No previous knowledge or basket-weaving experience is required.

About Elder Francis Jadis

Francis Jadis is a Mi’kmaw Elder and artisan who has worked in a variety of mediums for more than 50 years.

Growing up on Lennox Island and later living in Scotchfort, Francis learned basket weaving by watching family members. He continues this tradition through his work with wood, ash and longstanding techniques.

In addition to basket weaving, Francis creates eagle fans, jingle dress belts, potato baskets and baby bassinets while sharing his teachings and knowledge with future generations.

This is an interactive cultural-sharing experience centred on stories, teachings and basket-weaving knowledge. Participants will not create a basket to take home. Space is limited, and advance booking is required.
