Indigenous PEI Store — 111B Grafton Street

Grace Charron is an Indigenous fibre artist specializing in knitwear. Born in Temiscamingue, Quebec, Grace eventually found her way to her island home and now resides in Charlottetown.  A professional knitter, she has been handmaking sweaters, Afghans, baby clothing, shawls, market bags, socks, and crocheted sheep for over forty years. She sources her raw materials from local suppliers including MacAusland’s, Fleece & Harmony, Belfast Mini Mills, and Northern Watters Knitwear.

Raised in a foster home, Grace and her foster grandmother, Grammie Legance, didn’t speak each other’s language. Knitting became a means for them to connect, the universal language of rhythmic needles and balls of colourful yarn opening up a world of creative possibilities and practical applications for young Grace.  

Her love for fibre arts has endured and deepened over the 40 years between then and now. So deeply woven is her affinity for knitting, that Grace often finds herself dreaming in colours that she then translates into patterns. Or she’ll see something ordinary in her day-to-day life and it becomes the seed of inspiration for her next knitted creation. 

Today, Grace finds camaraderie in her craft as a member of the Lady Slipper Needles Arts Guild. She also credits her sister with helping her bring her ideas into focus and her friends for supporting her work. Grace’s knitted creations are available for purchase at craft fairs that she attends.
