Sasha Burkitt is a Mi’kmaq artisan from Lennox Island First Nation who specializes in the meticulous craft of handmade leather regalia belts/concho belts. Self taught, her practice is defined by a deep commitment to quality and a unique, detail-oriented aesthetic.

From time to time, she creates traditional regalia exclusively for her family, her public work focuses on handcrafted belts made from premium water buffalo leather. She specifically chooses this material for its superior strength and rich texture, ensuring each piece is as durable as it is beautiful.

Her signature style is defined by her use of 4 mm leather spots which are significantly smaller than the standard sizes typically used in regalia belts. This choice allows her to move beyond traditional patterns and into the realm of storytelling, using the smaller scale to create intricate, highly detailed designs that are uniquely her own. For her, the process of placing each tiny spot is a form of meditation; it is a “slow art” that transforms part of a traditional regalia into a canvas for creativity.

Every belt is 100% handmade, reflecting the Mi’kmaq values of patience, resilience, and the belief that everyday objects should be crafted with good intentions, love, and built to last. Her belts serve as visual storytellers and symbols of identity for many Mi’kmaq people of Prince Edward Island.
