Turtle Island Traditional Crafts

Dr. Corinne Chappell is a distinguished Mi’kmaq scholar, educator, author, and artisan from Prince Edward Island. Her inspiration comes from her Mi’kmaq community, and her work reflects a deep connection to culture, tradition, and identity. As an artisan, she combines traditional Mi’kmaq styles with contemporary design, preserving and celebrating Mi’kmaq cultural heritage while fostering greater understanding and respect across communities.

Dr. Chappell creates a wide range of original pieces, including ribbon shirts and skirts, regalia, peaked hat keychains, Mi’kmaq peaked hats, quill earrings, beaded crafts, eagle feather cases, regalia for 18″ dolls, beaded Christmas ornaments, petroglyph quilts, Red Dress and Orange Shirt pins, and infant moccasins. Her work incorporates embroidery, hand beading, and hand sewing on materials such as felt, leather, birch bark, and fabric.

Dr. Chappell’s creations represent resilience, humility, ancestors, and future generations. Guided by teachings from her mother, Elders, Aunties, and her community, she carries forward knowledge that is not hers alone, but something to be shared with and preserved for future generations.

Through her multifaceted contributions as an educator, author, and artist, Dr. Chappell has dedicated her career to advancing Indigenous education, promoting cultural revitalization, and decolonizing academic institutions.
