Indigenous PEI at Capital City Canada Day 

We’re excited to bring the Indigenous PEI Pop-up to Victoria Park for Canada Day, where visitors can explore the rich traditions, artistry, and culture of the Mi’kmaq and other Indigenous peoples of Epekwitk. Throughout the day, our booth will feature interactive demonstrations, hands-on activities, and beautifully crafted work from local artisans — offering a meaningful opportunity to connect with Indigenous voices and stories.

The full schedule of events are as followed:

11:00 AM – 7:00 PM 
Indigenous PEI Pop-up Activation 
Explore Indigenous art and culture through the Indigenous PEI Pop-up, showcasing handmade creations from Mi’kmaq and Indigenous artisans across Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island). The booth will feature a curated selection of artwork, jewelry, and apparel, along with opportunities to engage with artists and learn about the stories behind their work. 

12:00 PM – 3:00 PM 
Mi’kmaq Quill Chalk Art Designs with Melissa Peter-Paul 
Watch as Mi’kmaq artist Melissa Peter-Paul transforms the pavement into a large-scale chalk mosaic inspired by traditional quillwork designs. Visitors are invited to help complete the mural by colouring in outlined designs, creating a collaborative piece that celebrates Mi’kmaq artistry. 

12:00 PM – 2:00 PM 
Quillwork and Beading with Noella Moore, Annie Gallant, and Bonnie Gallant 
Join local artisans as they demonstrate traditional Mi’kmaq quillwork and beadwork. Visitors are welcome to observe, ask questions, and learn more about the materials, techniques, and cultural knowledge behind these art forms. 

2:00 PM – 4:00 PM 
Drum Making Demonstration with Brett Bernard 
Stop by to see Brett Bernard from Experience Lennox Island as he demonstrates how traditional hand drums are constructed, sharing stories of their use in ceremony, celebration, and community connection. 

4:00 PM – 6:00 PM 
Basket Weaving with Nora Richard and Julie Murphy 
Join these talented Mi’kmaq artisans as they share their basketry techniques and speak to the cultural knowledge and tradition carried through each weave.
