Join Mi’kmaw basket weaver Nora Richard for a guided introduction to Mi’kmaq basket weaving.

Nora will share her creative process and introduce participants to the materials, techniques and knowledge involved in making a basket. Through demonstrations, instruction and hands-on guidance, participants will explore the patience and craftsmanship required to shape and assemble their own piece.

Each participant will weave a vase-shaped basket to take home while learning about a tradition carried forward through generations of Mi’kmaq basket weavers.

The experience is designed for beginners and is thoughtfully paced to allow time for instruction and guided project work. Participants should plan to attend the full three-hour session. All required tools and materials will be provided.

About Nora Richard

Born and raised in Richmond, Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island), Nora Richard is a Mi’kmaw basket weaver and a member of Lennox Island First Nation. Although her introduction to basket weaving was unexpected, she quickly discovered a natural ability and a deep connection to the art.

Over the past 14 years, Nora has developed her own distinctive approach to basket weaving. She continues to explore new styles, create custom and personalized pieces, and restore older baskets that have become worn through years of use.

For Nora, basket weaving is both a therapeutic outlet and a meaningful way to connect with her culture and her son, whom she is teaching the art form. She is grateful to be able to source locally the natural materials that are well suited to her work.

Passionate about keeping the tradition of basket weaving alive, Nora shares her skills and knowledge through basket-weaving demonstrations and experiences. Her baskets are available at the Indigenous PEI Store in Charlottetown, the PEI Crafts Council’s retail shop, Poppies Porch, and select craft fairs. She also shares her creations through her Facebook page, Mi’Kmaq Basket Weaver.
